Although it's the hols, everyone seem busy too esp KL. I was pondering about what I've done (not the song) for my hols and I realised that I couldn't really revise my work because music is on my mind all the time. Paramore would just loop in my head while I'm attempting to read some chemistry. And that simply sucks. Maybe Kl has a point afterall...that he doesn't want to commit to gigs. I guess studies should be everyone's top priorty afterall, esp for next year. I'm kinda sick of agreeing with people who goes "Aiya fail lah...don't care lah". I guess it's really time to stop pushing for gigs coz I don't think I can balance my passion for music and studies. Tried and tested for one year already.

Maybe it will be a real break from now on afterall.

WOOOOOOOOOO...I just realised it's 3:45 birthday!!!!

Updated post:
GUYS! WTF. WE'RE ONE YEAR OLD!! I JUST REALISED WHILE I'M TYPING THIS MOTIVATIONAL TALK! What a year.

Original Post:
Yo the band leader is here to give motivational talk again. I'm glad things are progressing quite fast nowadays. I was impressed by everyone's efficiency in learning songs (and learn them good). In particular, Daniel, for being able to fit into the music so well within such a short time (2 jamming sessions!). I particularly love Can't Take My Eyes Off You. :) How we managed to conquer it so fast. It just feels great to be back on track again. I really appreciate everyone's effort to make time for jamming despite our own crazy schedules. I really didn't expect everyone would agree so readily to jam on the 16th again especially when Dan has YLTC the next day (and a nagging mum :( ) and KL is supposed to have a date :P

It's a great start but sure there's room for improvement. I think it's time to analyze the songs we have been doing. Turn up and volume and listen for details. Because it's the small details that make a big difference. Details like when to play/when not to and the little guitar parts which complements the keyboards. Meanwhile Bass and Drums should be working on our flawless coordination. Vocals need to be more hardworking on the harmo aspect. Unfortunately, the harmo is still not RN08 standard yet :(

Work hard guys! For RN09 and any other gigs in the future. 3:45!

PS: Currently, my mind is bursting with ideas to remix the songs we're gonna be trying / tried before like Boston :D But ZL is not responding to my call for him to do some remixing at my house D: And oh...we need a new blog skin for a new year!

Going back to our Roots

Going back to our Roots

It has been a long time since we last jammed together. I've decided to type this post because I want you guys to know that the 3:45 is not dead, yet. In case you guys haven't given a thought about it, I think our currently line-up is v shaky. And we're no longer as united as before. It's time to get back together this holiday. Yes, amidst our busy schedules.

<s>With the depature of minh, I've not much confidence in progressing towards songs that are of higher difficulty than Rock Night's. I suggest we go back to our roots. I hope to include Li Rui back in to play keyboards again instead of adding any other outsiders. It has been tried and tested that outsiders don't work well...In addition, since we're all of the same standards, it's easier to progress together as a band.

With LR, I suggest we stick to easy to handle and songs with piano tunes like Coldplay and revive our Rock Night and old tracks like It's my Life and Built to Last using the keyboard. It might need abit of experimentation to get the things right...so it might take more than a mth or so. That's the first step to stabilizing ourselves. </s>

Bear might now have to go lead guitar and keyboards will do the rythem.

I also suggest that Kh and Kl go invent a unique way of presenting yourselves instead of just meddling with harmonizing only so we can make a 2nd vocalist to our own advantage. You guys would have to work them out.

Guys this hols is our chance. Grab it before the A level monster comes. Lets create a never-tested way of doing things. Things might just turn out v nicely.

YEC videos

Hi long time since I posted.

Even though the YEC gig didn't turn out to be what I expected from 3:45 + OHM, I recognise their efforts to salvage the ever decreasing high-atmosphere in the Hall.

So these are the videos of their performance. I shaln't elaborate more about it or point fingers at anyone because there's no point crying over spilled milk. After I came out of the stage, I told myself that I've tried my best to work on the recovery. I don't know if anyone could understand, but it was so hard to tell myself to get back on track after the opening song. Yanwen said that I look as if I could drop my sticks anytime and walk off the stage. And I think that's pretty true. I was rushing to end Hysteria very badly. But after the first song, I told myself that since the first song is screwed, I just needed to play my best for the next 3 in hope of a recovery. And I did. Much thanks to Yi Sheng for encouraging me all the way and keeping me on after the disastrous start. And much thanks for the encore from the crowd which gave us a chance to show a better "Hysteria".

But I guess yesterday performance wasn't a total failure. I felt that we managed to work our way back for the 3rd, 4th and 5th song (3:45 coincidentally) despite the tremendous drop in confidence level. And that's whats most important ain't it? Haha.

We've also managed to take back many learning points through this peformance. I guess it was a bad choice to do 4 tough MUSE songs right from the start given only 1 week of preparation time. Even though Zhi ler, bear and I started playing MUSE since the start of the year, Paul and Wen Song didn't have enough time to prepare sufficiently. Hence, naturally, we were not sufficiently prepared for a recovery in case of a screw up. I found out too that for once, Zhi Ler actually felt insecure over the performance. But we neglected our insercurities and went ahead with the performance thinking that everything would turn out fine. Bad choice. I guess we were just too over-confident after a successful Rock Night. Year End Celebrations (YEC) has finally revealed our immaturity towards music.

I think we can gain the most experience only through a failure. As a young band, We've still much to learn. I hope you guys will still be there for us after YEC because we need you guys to make a next performance successful. And to those who didn't managed to watch our Rock Night performance, I hope you guys will still believe that Talentime and YEC are NOT our best performances.

We're not giving up.

Do I hear Gigs???

(Ring ring) Do I hear Gigs???

Hi All! 3:45 is alive and kicking again after Rock Night! It was really interesting to look through our 1st jamming recording videos, all the complains (by me yes....) about stage dynamics and proficiency and all our desperate songlists. But I'm glad all these have became the past. Rock Night was really a major turning point for us. Somehow...overnight, we managed to solve all these problems and our lack of confidence onstage.

Not sure if you guys remember. Last time, before auditions, I would get all sick and stressed out and we would just screw up our auditions and performances. But now, I dare say I'm raring to go for performances. And I'm sure it's the same for all of you guys. Song choice is also less of a problem now that everyone is taking up initiative to learn new songs by themselves and Kah Lok ability is getting more and more powderful.

However, I feel that our band can and should go much further. I suggest we start experimenting and writing songs from now on. Starting with the acoustic guitar. Composing and covering songs are just 2 very different things. Because the former requires much much more passion and time. It's hard to force people to spend time doing so. And even harder (or nearly impossible) to instil passion in someone who doesn't feel much love for music. It's hard to describe what is passion but if you have it, you certainly can feel it. For me, I would think of music and performing almost all the time. I would generate guitar tunes in my head and lyrics to fit them even though I know nothing about playing the guitar nor can I sing (well). My feet tap automatically to the groove and sometimes I would fantasize I'm matt bellemy.

I ain't going to force anyone to do the same thing ever since the previous unsuccessful attempts. I've learnt that if you have the passion, you have it. No excuses. Ultimately, I hope the band can spend some time during the hols to play and jam music. But whether or not the band follows suit, I'm sure I'll be jamming and experimenting stuff throughout this hols.

Think about it guys. I'm off to buy bass pedal with ZL. =P

MUSE is fun!

MUSE is fun!

Just obeying zhi ler orders. Our band has been asked whether we want to perform for Open Day (18th Oct), Seniors Graduation Night (1st Dec) and Year End Celebrations (?). All for NJ. I think it's quite an ok schedule and I think we can still find time to squeeze in more gigs in between.

My purpose of typing this post is to suggest that we could do an acoustic set for Open Day. I'm not sure where's the venue (but surely in NJC...duh) but I think an acoustic set will be pretty crowd friendly. Besides, we have never done it before. Good to try. What do you guys think about it? We already have a couple of acoustic-able songs on hand like Somewhere and probably unintended?

List of acoustic songs (hand picked by Zl and I):
Make you feel better - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fomvApObpkM)
Umbrella - Rihanna (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5paQ9BwFAgI)
Viva La Vida - Coldplay (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Sur7a7PIaA)
Unintended - Muse
Only One - Yellowcard (Get from me)

Promos is fucked up.

Hey man...how are you guys? Promos stress is really mounting up with around just 24 days to go before GP. Singapore education system really sucks.

Listening to LP live in S'pore this morning led me to think of what kind of music we want to play after promos. I would really like to play some MUSE and LP as well as Foo Fighters. Maybe it's time we find our strengths and settle in a certain genre...=)

And I was thinking maybe we shouldn't chiong gigs too. My bad but I guess it's better to prepare another set of solid songs for a gig like Rock Night rather then go many small insignificant gigs and perform mediocrely. Saves us lots of time and jitters too hahaha...

Oh well...just ponder about it amidst your non-mugging time. Well, it's because in order to make it possible for us to perform, the team would have to get sponsers to folk out another 360 bucks for permit to play songs that are copyrighted aka modern songs. And, unfortunately, every cent the team borrow, they would have to guarantee a 70% profit, which is so %#$%#$#@ I know. So...if they borrow 360 bucks more, they would have to earn 1000bucks and it's so unlikely our band can sell 200 tickets just to offset that extra 1000. I think it work this way....meanwhile keep your fingers crossed. Indeed, Talentime was really bad and in fact, even worst then Grad Night. There was no energy. The guitar was out of sync. Everyone was too indulged in their own instruments they forgotten their main aim was to entertain. Even the PA didn't put in their best efforts too. We were too inexperienced then...Talentime was only our 2nd performance. Many of you guys had high hopes on us but we failed to meet yours and our expectations.

BUT

Yestersay night, I dared say we brought the house down. The screams of "ENCORE!", which we hoped for so long, were finally heard. Loud and in unison. The way we like it. Ystd night, I believed we truly outperformed ourselves. Little did we know we would rock the house so badly. And that's only possible because of you supporters. Esp our loyal RV supporters, Fann, amanda, emily and co; my bros ziyi and yisheng (and Masu for not going 4c outing!); xiaoxi and fongyee; gd old LI RUI and his sweet female companion emily! And of course our new supporters from PAE/JAE. We truly appreciate it. Thank you and we hope to see you guys for everyone of our GIGS!

Lastly, I am v v glad that every member of 3:45 has placed their 100% effort during performance. We might have put in lacklustre effort during some of our prac and jamming sessions. But yesterday, we managed to convert half a year of blood and sweat into a really energetic and entertaining performance. Special thanks to bear for playing extraordinarily well on that night. Kah Lok and Kah Han for releasing their confidence and rocked it out. Minh for his crazy stunts and daring movements. And of course Zhi Ler for keeping time so well and so confidently all the time! It was our best night. It felt like MUSE in Glastonbury 2004 (which they described as their most enjoyed gig) and KKJ winning Powerjam 08 at Zouk on the 29/7. But I believe this is NOT our peak. And it's not going to come in anytime soon. Coz we're just going to get better and better. To end of this post, I would like to thank everyone, 3:45 and supporters. We're the best.

Special thanks to fann for the photo!

Cheers,
Your band leader

Photos Ngee Ann Gig

Hey guys. Today's performance was mediocre on the whole, and could really be improved if we want to wow the crowd on Rock Night.

Let's start with myself and the vocals. I wasn't really confident about myself during the performance, so I wasn't very dynamic and expressive. Plus my body is shaking quite badly which made my voice very vibrational.

I think the It's My Life quiet part was great though, and Kahlok handled it well.

Guitars-wise not really on top condition, maybe it was the amps? I'm not sure.

The crowd wasn't really energised, maybe because we weren't too.

So basically, stage dynamism is our no.1 weakness... We still need to work on it.

hey i've got some songs to chip in too

1. our time now - plain white Ts
2. never too late - three days grace
3. beautiful soul - jesse mcCartney
4. because you live - jesse McCartney
5. obviously -mcfly
6. love you lately - daniel powter (needs piano..)
7. collide - howie day( why not? needs a tambourine though)

ok tats it lor. these are quite happy songs lah. not emo.
lets jus put in our best for this gig rush den when its over we all can relax

Ok it's songs choosing time again! I hope we can hit at least 8 covers before we close off for promos. We currently have 5 covers and 1 "decent" cover of All I Need Is You. Hopefully, we can do 3 more, including one national day song. Here are the songs everyone has smsed me about and vice versa.

In no particular order:
1) If you're not the one - Daniel Bedingfield (KL)
2) The Story of a girl - Nine days* (ZL)
3) 5 colours in her hair - Mcfly* (ZL/Minh)
4) Oh! Gravity - Switchfoot* (WS)
5) Beautiful Killer - Flybar (WS)
6) Superman - Five for Fighting (WS)
7) Newborn - MUSE (WS)
8) Last Kiss - Pearl Jam (WS)

Please remember that our priority is to find a song for National Day Celebration performance. We're doing 2 songs. One of them will be It's my Life. Lets try to select and perfect the song before rock night as auditions will be around that period of time (ard 25 onwards July). The songs with asterisks beside them indicates songs possible for Nat Day. I highly recommand Oh! Gravity if KL can bring the effect out! :) And lets do newborn, the rocker, if KL can do it as well. Remember muse is our jinx...lol

Cheers,
Shuen

Respite

Ahh I hate to break this news to you guys, but I decided to take a hiatus from performing after Rock Night.

I made this decision after realising how bad my results were for this CT, and I knew I had too many commitments and that are going to come up during this term. With more band jamming and performances, I'm worried I cannot cope with studies. You all may say I'm selfish, but I got to admit the band is not my utmost priority. This is JC, and my focus is academics. So in this 2 months leading to Promos, I can't afford to lose any time I have and start working for my results I really want to have.

I might not be planning to return after Promos either because J2 life is starting, and it is bound to be even busier.

Sorry guys.

Our calendar!

Hey guys I've made some modifications to the calendar so it would be more convenient for you guys. Basically I've added your emails to the calendar sharing list so that you all can view and edit the events by creating your own Google Calendar account using your current email account. Please tell me whether it works or not so I can help you out with any problem you might face. This makes our band calendar more organised and easier to view, because we can integrate your Personal calendar into our Band calendar and thus we can organise our jamming dates and times more effectively. This also lessens the amount of time and money we spend messaging to each other just to organise the timings. Alternatively if everything does not work for you now, you guys can log in through the band account and edit the events on your own.

In order to make your Personal calendar to be integrated to the Band calendar, you have to edit the sharing settings of your Personal calendar, by allowing to be shared to the threefortyfiveband@gmail.com calendar. These can be done under calendar settings in your own Google calendar.

I've already integrated mine, so you all can try out too.

Reflections about 30/6/08 jam

Hey guys. Sorry for the bad comments just now. After a talk with zhi ler I realised what was wrong. But trust me it's all for the good of the band. Perhaps because I'm the leader and the person who built this band, I have very high expectations of ourselves, so high till I've forgotten we're still a band of half a year old with only 2 gigs experience. So when we fall, I can't accept it. And maybe it's more gigs we need to grow. I've decided I wouldn't force anything upon you guys from now on but just suggest. Perhaps it's good to keep things natural. Trust our own feelings and do what we feel is right.

I just hope everyone can put in sufficient effort in preparation and during jamming so we can perform confidently and really well. I wanna our audience to remember us for our christma & music and not our failures. The previous few failures have inevitably made everyone less confident. Me included. I must say I still have doubts about our capability to perform well on the 1st of Aug. And I must admit it's due to individuals. But it's really beyond myself; Tried and crashed. So I've decided to go for the natural process, which is to wait and hope a change would be brought about.
I believe we can do this 1st Aug thing. But I need confidence, which comes about from consistent performances and enthusiasiam. Let us be serious about our music and learn how to let go of ourselves on stage.

And finally, the cup is now half full instead of half empty.

Directions for band's song writing:

Hmm...ok I admit I've thinking alot of all the band stuff during the whole of this week till it affected my CT. But it's over so who cares wtf. Some of my views.
If we guys are going to write new songs, I would be totally against Metal and Emo songs. I wish to go for alt rock/pop and hard rock sometimes. Those that local bands such as King Kong Jane and Electricos and probably West Grand Boulervard play. I think my limit would be a song like Slither by Velvet Revolvers. It would be crowd/radio friendly. Preferably, we can include interesting but not overly complicated guitar riffs and drum grooves eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrFNYRUBlEc.
Guitar solos are perfectly fine for me. In fact I would love to distinguish ourselves that we end some of our singles on guitar solos. But the guitar solos should not tend to metal. Fast rock is ok.
We can go for upbeat songs with fast tempo at like 140+BPM but preferably in a few months time when I get my timing for fast songs solid. Keeping the songs at 120BPM and below is perfectly fine for me.
But I wouldn't prefer too slow acoustic songs like Collide by Howie Day. Interesting acoustic intro is good tho. That's all I've got to say. Guys just post your views if you've got anything in mind! heh

Ok few issues I think we should have in mind for the next 6mths to come. Our aim: Still the 16 songs gig at Ben's and Jerry. Don't give that up.

To solve the problem of low song succession rate:
1) Find one particular artiste/band which songs we can do relatively well/decent and move on from there. I suggest currently: The Calling & The Click 5

2) Analyze the songs we can do now and find the reasons out why. We then find songs base on these type of style/genre

To increase exposure/gain stage experience
3) I hope we can go for gigs after the CT at least once every 1 month. Instead of just waiting for rock night, I think it's time we roam outside and see what's the crowd outside like. How do we react, etc. It's good for stage EXP too. This will be NA during exam periods but I hope you guys can put abit of your activities for this part of the band at least for this Non-A Level year.

4) I think we should organize frequent outings to see how other bands perform in gigs. You MAY have to pay money but....it's paying for "learning". I don't see how it's not worth. Then we can get to experience live stage conditions and see how local bands rock the stage. You guys can check out http://soft.com.sg/forum/gigs-concerts/ for gigs.

Minh suggest we can go for the RGS concert. Rough details
6th July, Sunday
Grass Pavillion
2pm to 10pm
$20 tickets. $25 at door

Featuring local acts like Great Spy Expt and Electricos, MGS BANDAGE Finding Michelle, Redeeming the Riot (ACS), 10 mins late (HCI), and other school bands.
Full details here: Things to note

Guys few things I think you all should take note:

1) Original?
Do you think we're rushing into the originals too fast? Somehow the initial enjoyment of creating the original has faded and instead it has been replaced by the thought of whether it's a good original or not. The original's kind of emo and not really stage-friendly. Would many appreciate it and will it leave ??? in the audience heads?

2) Jamming Songs
Guys lets stop learning more new songs to try out. I suggest concentrate on the current few. That's the set + All I need is you + Disappear + Angels or Devils
However, self try outs are always ok. As long as it does not involve getting the whole band to learn it. For those who haven't learnt the above songs, please get down to doing it and perfect them by the 1st 2 jamming dates.

3) Important Rules to note
-If the date/time of jamming is told to you before you got informed of your other activities, jamming will take priority and DO NOT attempt to change the jamming date to suit your personal self-enjoyment activities.
-Also, if you want to change the original jamming date, you must do so 3 days before the day of jamming. It's only fair that all band members ensure we do not cause any inconvenience to anyone. This is regardless of the importance of the event, eg: Parent's birthday celebration, school activities. Because if it's that important, you would have been informed of it early, no? If you have to attend a funeral, you may not come. If you fail to do so, jamming will be priority.

4) Jamming Dates for the month
Tentatively:
7th June
16th June
21th June*
28th June*

*No more learning of new songs. Iris - The Goo Goo Dolls
2. Better Days - also The Goo Goo Dolls
3. Love Hurts - Incubus
4. Sweet and Low - Augustana (don't know if it's too high for KL)
5. Angels or Devils - Dishwalla
6. The Middle - Jimmy Eat World (fast little song)
7. Dani California - Red Hot Chilli Peppers (a little hard to bring out the 'feel' of the song)
8. Have A Nice Day - Stereophonics

Yeah. If you all need these songs, just ask me when I'm online :)

Anyway, if you guys are wondering what I've been up to, I'm still working on the lyrics for our original. Still trying to get inspiration. During brainstorming, managed to think of a chorus for some cheeky little love song with a added tune to it, but has no link to our singles. Lol.

Also tried changing the lyrics of this song "Anna Molly" by Incubus to a Chem titration song. Haha quite funny if we were to sing it out. Still working on it though.

Somehow feel that writing songs is quite fun...

Flooding!!!!!

Current want-to-do:
Iris - Goo goo Dolls
Disappear - Hoobastanks
Be Like That - 3 Doors Down
Runaway - Electrico
I Want You - Electrico (Need to listen proper track)

ADDDDDD!! The worst thing: Nobody look like they thought so. Buck up and stop being complacent. Esp if we want 1 practice per week. No matter whether we like it or not, sian or not, we must be able to perform at a certain good enough standard. Get rid of the mentality that doing new songs will get rid of the sian-ness. Do a new song badly and you get the same feeling. Get your mentalities straight.

And as for action wise. I only can say we have to feel the music. Sometimes, the more stoned and concentrated u are on the music, the more you can't do it. Don't just stand in one spot and look at your instruments. It looks extremely dumb. At least remain eye contact and smile. If not, move around abit. At least show the music is moving through you.

Think about it. The latter is what we lack alot and NEVER showing any improvement.
<img width='1' height='1' Mr Keith Tan actually invited 3:45 to do a recording of our songs for the school. Everything is still currently in the planning stage and hence nothing is confirmed as of now. We are invited to do not only recording but also start a kind of personal music project to promote the music/band culture in the school. The only problem now is that Kah Lok is in AC and he might not be able to head down to NJC for recording sessions that often. We're still trying to work that out. In addition, it is also said that a jamming studio would be added as part of NJC's facilities, which would be ultra cool (Cooler than Bear's LP Ultra). This is a great boost to the band and we're currently working harder to play better stuff. Meanwhile, keep checking out our blog for updates.

Hi guys....here is my suggested playlist. Boston - Augustana
2. Angels or Devils - Dishwalla
3. Rooftops - lostprophets (sounds hard though.)
<s>4. Won't Go Home Without You - Maroon 5 (lol if kahlok can do falsetto well?)</s>
5. Hey There Delilah - Plain White T's
6. Give Until There's Nothing Left - Relient K
7. Dani California - Red Hot Chili Peppers (duno if you all hear b4. and duno if kahlok will sound nice in this)
8. Pieces - Sum 41
9. Lonely Day - System of a Down (don't worry it's a slow song...)

Please give some comments on the choices made... cos I really don't know if it's suitable for everyone.

fellow band members
time to move away from muse
a few songs to check out:

1. Kahlok really got the crowd high with his movements... while the other members just moved to the groove...

Initially, we felt we could win this.. but I guess the judges didn't like our performance.. either we weren't confident enough (esp me...) or they were just better. We would be taking a short break from performing to improve our skills. Even if we screwed up, let's just treat this as a learning experience.

At here, we would like to congratulate One Hot Minute for being champs, and for being great friends. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who took time off from their busy schedule to grace this event, especially the supporters from RV for all those flowers and the big poster you all made. Without you guys, we wouldn't have motivation to perform. It is you all who keeps us moving on. Even if we let you guys down this time, we would do better next time.

It's time for us to Plug In into the new age. 3:45 forward!

3:45 performing at Talentime 2008

3:45 is performing at Talentime 2008!

Venue : LT 5 NJC
Date : 1st Feb, Friday
Time : 7.00 to 10.00pm
Tickets selling at : Only 5 bucks

This might be the last time you guys might see us performing together as a band in school. Due to all the contraversies of some of our members not being able to stay in the school. Btw do show us your utmost support and invite everyone to watch us play.<s>And please do shout for encore because we will be performing one more new song although we are only allowed to perform one.</s>We'll be performing 2 songs with an interval in the middle. So don't think it's one song! Also, we are also trying to seek people to contribute financially (yes $$$) for equipment rental. As we all know, the school (whether rv or nj) always lacks amps and all that bullshit. So if anyone if willing to contribute some cash (say 5 each would be really enough), we appreciate it alot. That's about all. Although there were a few "unexpected mistakes", I really feel that everyone enjoyed our performance as much as we did. So many thanks here from us!

Meanwhile we were also discussing the future direction of our band, and we decided unanimously to take a 1 year rest from the scene (probably even longer like 2 years, so watch us during JC Prom Night!)

If anyone has taken videos of us for the performance on Prom Night, kindly give us a link or send us the video.
